What is Dains’ Tax Investigation Service?

Our Tax Investigation Service gives you expert representation and complete peace of mind if HMRC launches an enquiry into your tax affairs.

Available exclusively to Dains Tax clients, this service ensures that if you are selected for an HMRC investigation, you have immediate access to professional support - without worrying about the escalating time and costs involved.

It’s important to note that this is not an insurance policy. It’s a specialist service designed to give you the expertise, representation, and confidence you need should HMRC raise a query.

How Our Service Supports You

While no one can prevent an investigation, our service ensures you’re fully supported from start to finish. We will:

  • Provide detailed explanations of complex tax issues without cost restrictions

  • Challenge HMRC’s assumptions and ensure enquiries remain fair and proportionate

  • Limit requests to relevant information and manage all communication with HMRC on your behalf

  • Prepare for and attend any HMRC meetings

  • Deliver a robust defence to protect your tax position and reputation

Whether you’re facing a cross-tax enquiry, technical challenge, or full records review, we’ll help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Why This Matters

HMRC activity is increasing. Enquiries are becoming more frequent, more data-driven, and more complex - and importantly, anyone can be selected, even when their tax affairs are fully up to date. HMRC runs both targeted investigations and random compliance checks across individuals and businesses alike. Responding effectively takes time, skill, and a deep understanding of your tax position.

Key trends include:

  • Record tax revenues: HMRC collected £843 billion in the year to 31 March 2024 - its highest ever

  • Compliance expansion: Over 4,000 new officers have joined HMRC’s compliance teams since 2021

  • Rising compliance yield: £41.8 billion recovered in 2023/24 (up from £34 billion in 2022/23)

  • Strong return on investment: For every £1 HMRC spends, it recovers £22 in tax
