- Rooney onside to strengthen Dains’ tax investigation practice...
Wednesday 26 November 2008 -
Dains has expanded its tax investigations business with the appointment of Gary Rooney as Director to head up the tax investigations team.
The engagement is widely seen as one of a series of high calibre appointments Dains are currently making as a continued drive to innovate and build the depth and breadth of their client offerings.
Gary has over 25 years experience working on tax investigations, from local district level to Special Civil Investigations. He has also been heavily involved in investigations instigated by the Civil Investigation of Fraud team - part of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which deals with cases of suspected serious fraud and complex investigations, representing individuals, sole traders, partnerships and corporate entities, covering a broad range of trades, industries and professions.
Gary’s particular areas of expertise include cases of suspected serious fraud being undertaken by HMRC under Code of Practice 9, also known as ‘Hansard’. He has also been instrumental in assisting several legal defence teams in HMRC prosecution cases.
Since joining the profession from the HMRC 10 years ago, Gary has continued his Tax Investigation career working for two of the ‘big four’ accountancy firms, KPMG and PWC, before joining Dains. Gary’s experience also includes advising entertainers and sports professionals on tax issues. A keen rugby player himself, Gary is proficient in making tax recommendations to sports testimonial committees and, most notably, was a member of the testimonial committee for rugby legend and World Cup winner, Martin Johnson.
Andy McQuillan, Head of Taxation at Dains, comments. “With an exceptional level of tax investigations experience, a deep knowledge of HMRC structure, practices, compliance powers and negotiation skills; Gary will spearhead the development of the Tax Investigations business for Dains. This new appointment reflects the diversity of expertise that we have within our tax practice. By recruiting and investing in the best people in the industry we are able to offer our clients first-class tax advice at a local level.”
Commenting on his appointment, Gary said. “I am really excited to join such a progressive, forward thinking organisation as Dains. There is definitely a growing demand for specialist advice with HMRC continuing to increase the number and depth of enquiries they launch into tax returns. With HMRC’s additional information and penalty powers also about to take effect, clients having access to this level of expertise from a regional accountancy firm is testament to how Dains are continually growing to meet their client’s ever changing needs.”
